H B Warner |
The earliest known person is Walter de LICKEFOLDE, who is recorded at Lickfold in West Sussex in 1297. The hamlet of Lickfold is in the parish of Lodsworth, but through the centuries many more family events are recorded in the Parish Registers of the adjacent parish of Lurgashall. The family is believed to originate in this locality, the derivation being anglo-saxon leac fauld, meaning an enclosure in which garlic (or leeks) were grown. Two distinct branches have come forward to the present day, because a James LICKFOLD was buried in the parish of Seale & Tongham in Surrey in 1610, and his descendants became a totally distinct family. They include the distinguished Hollywood actor, H B WARNER, shown on the left. He was born in London as Henry Byron Charles Sylvester LICKFOLD, but used H B WARNER as his stage name. He appeared in five Frank Capra films and played the part of Christ in Cecil B de Mille's "King of Kings". Other family members have settled in U.S.A. including descendants of the LICKFOLDs who continued to live in the Lickfold area of West Sussex until the 1880s.
