The earliest known person is John MATTHEWS, born circa 1728, buried 29th April 1790, who lived in Llanwarne, Herefordshire, U.K. He married Elizabeth WOODWARD at Llanwarne on 4th August 1751. His third son, William established a branch of the family in the next parish, Llandinabo where several of the family were Timber Merchants. One of his grandchildren, Thomas, shown on the left, was the Chemist at "Man of Ross" House, in the centre of Ross-on-Wye around 1900. His eldest son was Vernon Lickfold Matthews (below left) who became a Surgeon in the Royal Navy and who died in 1915 when his ship H.M.S. Viknor was sunk off Northern Ireland with the loss of all hands.
